Re-design of a course through Gagne's 9 steps

In this project, I will try to redesign one of my courses through Gagne's 9 steps. 

If you haven't heard about Gagne's 9 steps, it provides a step-by-step approach that can help managers, trainers, and facilitators structure their training so that their students or teams get the most from their learning opportunities.

I would like to use my 'Biological Basis of Human Behaviour' course. It is a great course that includes plenty of information about the biology and psychology of human behaviors, but it doesn't go beyond this. The use of PowerPoint slides and long-tiring lectures are the components of why most of my friends don't get the maximum benefit from the course. 

Gagne's model consists of 9 important steps, and throughout my blog, you will see applications of each step. 


Use of Gagne's 9 steps

The lesson will be about our vision, how its works, and the biology behind it.

1- Gaining Attention (Reception)

I started my lesson with a quote to remind students how fascinating our brains our such as 
To gain the attention of my students, I will show them some illusions with a few activities.

2- Informing Learners of the Objective (Expectancy)

While they got confused with the illusion that I showed in the first part, they will want to learn more about our vision.

I will explain today's course content with what they are gonna learn. I presented the list version of the lesson to stimulate a map in their minds.

I will give them brief information about the content with the use of thinglink.




 



Stage 3 - Stimulating Recall of Prior Learning (Retrieval)


I asked them some questions about what were the functions of our other senses in relation to the visual sense to recall their prior knowledge. Use of discussion board, or h5p quizzes would be beneficial in this stage.

Stage 4 - Presenting the Stimulus (Selective Perception)

To present the content of the lecture, I used sutori that I found very attention-taking with its design.




 Stage 5 - Providing Learning Guidance (Semantic Encoding)  

I used this stage in relation to the fourth stage. I added in sutori presentation some case studies, and 'check your knowledge activities'.  


Stage 6 - Eliciting Performance (Responding)

In this stage, I divided the class into groups. I wanted them to create a scenario to show me how our vision sense works in real-life situations.


Stage 7 - Providing Feedback (Reinforcement)

I actively monitor students, and tried to give them immediate feedback during the activities that I shared.


Stage 8 - Assessing Performance (Retrieval)

I prepared some questions that cover learning objectives presented at the beginning of the lesson.







Stage 9 - Enhancing Retention and Transfer (Generalization)

I will kindly ask the students to create a mind map in their minds about what we have learned after summarizing the lecture briefly.

I will give them optional websites, online courses, readings to enhance their knowledge.

Midterm Project: An interactive lesson by using web 2.0 tools

There is not a boring lesson, there is not an interactive, engaging lesson with new online tech tools.

 (also look at the microlearning)

In this short project, I used one of a unit from Recep Senturk's Comparative Theories and Methods book. It seems like a pdf page nothing special from other pages that full of plain texts. 

I am going to convert that lesson into an interactive lesson by using some of the web 2.0 tools that we learned during the lessons.

Let's begin with the 'sutori' which is totally different than classic powerpoints. 



If we return back and remember the ARCH, John Keller Model of Motivation, in the attention part, participation and using different materials to take attention of students has a vital role. To create a discussion environment, I used 'nearpod' that offers active participation that you can see below in the tool.






As the summary of the lesson, using interactive mind maps undoubtedly very important. Let's see the example above which covers important titles of our little lesson.







As the final activity of the lesson, I prepared some questions and some videos for the further resource of students.

A Social Psychology Lesson but with me

 Hi everybody!

As we all know, some lessons have a traditional style that doesn't use innovative technological advances like mentimeter, mind maps, new styles of powerpoints slide like nearpod, canva. I am going to talk about a social psychology lesson using social presence, cognitive presence, and teaching presence examples. 

Social psychology is a great field that observes the everyday life of people with experiments. So, before the lesson, probably, ask every student to think about what they observe in everyday situations that might be a relation to social psychology. To do that, online discussion boards great way like we do every week in our info to tech course.

It was beneficial to make students use their critical thinking ability and make connections between what we are going to learn and what we have been experiencing in our lives. 

I used mentimeter to (https://www.menti.com/124g8p6f6c) start with ore engaging way rather than diving into the topic. After a little discussion, I used a mind map to build a general map to show students what we are going to learn today. 



Then, I used 'sutori' to use its different way of presenting ideas. 




While I was using 'Sutori', I added other tools web 2.0 tools like 'eddpuzzle' because social psychology all about life and in real-life experiments. After briefly explaining the headlines of each subtitle, I used different experiment videos, of course with using 'eddpuzzle'. I added videos of 3 different experiments related to our topic by asking questions like 'How would conduct that experiment in terms of what we have learned in the previous weeks?', 'Were this experiment ethical?', and some important notes. 

After watching each experiment, sometimes I used the chat, and breakout rooms to learn students' ideas and push them to think. 


 


I also used again the same mind map that I mentioned above, but this time, as the last activity of the lesson in the little discussion group to think about what we have learned related to these topics and I expected for students to make connections with daily life examples in peer groups.


To show my students the most important thing is learning rather than an exam, I prepared a mini-quiz that includes daily life examples thanks to Kahoot. It is including some important points to review and exam-like questions. Here's the link!

In the end, I suggested them to visit some online courses.

I shared the video materials and online course links as the final announcement of the lesson. 

As an assignment, you should take an online course content for at least an hour, and share what you learned with your friends in the online forum thorough canvas (about 100 words :)

Positive Adolescence -Online Seminar-

We joined the seminar about positive adolescents given by Dr. Berra TaÅŸ and Pr. Dr. Sefa Bulut. It was really informative. I will share the important headlines. The language of the event was Turkish.


Summary of the seminar

How should we communicate with young members of our society when they are in adolescence ages? 

-Communicating through sports activities one of the best ways to build an effective relationship with teens.

-Every teen has their own special talents and positive sides that are waiting for exploration -We take our youngsters into the consideration as a bright future of our society rather than some problematic ones. 

-The problem is the use of language also. They use accusatory language. 

For example, Parents should be more emphatic. If a teen is coming late to the home, you should not use accusatory language. 

Rather, you should say that Your lateness is making me upset. 

Saying: It was like that when we were kids causing a conflict of generations. It causes discussion. Using the computer, the phone general causes of the problem between the parent and the teen.

Field, competence, self-confidence, communication, character, compassion These are some important characteristics to build up positive adolescence.

We could not get into the Zoom system because of some issues. I guess the seminar was not allowed for the participants. We could not get an opportunity to ask questions one by one.

Open Online Course Analysis & Summary on a Digital Tool learned in class

Hi guys! I hope you're having a day. In this post, I am going to talk about my experiences and summary of a course which I took from coursera that is a well-known online learning platform. 


We have been already taken 'Introduction to Psychology course this semester, and I decided to take it from another professor to compare the differences in curriculum and teaching styles. 


First of all, I would like to mention the features of the platform that has a really cool design and push students to study. 

It is easy to use, and you can arrange a weekly goal to finish the lessons more effectively and rapidly. Also, it has different language subtitles options including the Turkish language. 



As I said in the beginning, I took 'Introduction to Psychology' course that is given by Paul Bloom from Yale University. 


Mostly, the curriculum was a bit different than what we have learned during the semester. I studied the development part of the course.  

It was beneficial to learn about foundational psychological theories and findings in psychology. I started with the discovery that our mental lives have a physical basis, introducing the field of neuroscience that I want to study in the future also. And then, It learned about two major psychological theories that have come to shape the world that we now live in (Freud’s psychodynamic theory and Skinner’s theory of behaviorism).

The course was supported not just videos of the lecture, but also some reading related to the content and videos of experiments.

At the end of each week, you should take some quizzes in order to measure if you understand or not. If you take the targeted grades, you can take a certificate of course.



If you don't have a paper to take notes on, the cool features of Coursera will help you to overcome. You can follow the lecture from its written format while watching it at the corner of the page, and you can add your thoughts at your notes.

Using a Web 2.0 tool in my courses for presentations!

 Hi again!

I hope you are all well. I will share with you some presentations that I used in my course thanks to Web 2.0 tools that we learned in our Info the Tech course.

I used two different Web 2.0 tools in my presentation for my cultural anthropology and educational sociology courses. 

-The Course Contents:

Cultural Anthropology is a course that gives us different approaches in terms of culture, history, human life. In short, It is related to what we have been living in our life. Feminism, dress code, colonialism, globalism, neoliberalism...

Sociology of Education course gives us perspectives on education with a sociological perspective. difficulties, terminological differences from place to place, social agencies, and institutions...

-Miracles that I performed with Web 2.0 tools:

First of all, I would like to mention my presentation on the 'Cultural Anthropology' course. We questioned the popularity of Netflix on the new generation and tried to find out some anthropological approaches during our resource process. We did some interviews and read some articles. In the end, our resource paper has not finished yet, but I will going to add our resource paper when it is done on my blog. 

We used ''sutori'' for the presentation, and it helped us to express our findings in an interactive way. Here's the presentation that we did!



Secondly, I used ''canva'' with my peer to present our resource findings on Australian distant education in our 'Sociology of Education' course. We researched historical developments of distance education and the problems that occurred in the last period of Australian distance education.
